Growing the Rainforests of the Sea

Often referred to as the “rainforests of the sea,” mangroves are crucial coastal ecosystems with remarkable attributes. They excel in carbon storage, surpassing terrestrial forests hectare for hectare, which underscores their significance in combatting climate change. Moreover, mangroves harbor diverse marine and terrestrial biodiversity, offering habitats to numerous species of fish, birds, and wildlife. They also provide essential resources and ecosystem services to coastal communities, including support for fisheries, timber and medicinal plants, and protection against tidal surges and tropical storms.

Recognizing the urgent need for conservation, Indika Nature actively supports the Mangrove Program in Action (IMPACT), a flagship initiative of Indika Energy launched in March 2023 in Paser, East Kalimantan. This three-year program extends beyond traditional restoration efforts, emphasizing community empowerment, environmental resilience, and sustainable development. By involving local communities in mangrove preservation and restoration, a symbiotic relationship between nature and people is fostered.

Collaborating with government entities, local communities, and Maroon, our implementing partner, we amplify efforts to protect and rehabilitate mangroves, contributing to Indonesia’s broader goals of carbon neutrality. Our ambitious plans entail rehabilitating mangroves across 250 hectares of land in Lori, Sungai Langir, Tajur, and Pasir Mayang villages, prioritizing four mangrove species based on local conditions and dominance, anticipating significant ecological benefits and carbon sequestration potential.

As of December 2023, IMPACT had planted more than 46,600 mangrove seedlings, expected to sequester 573 tons of CO2 annually across 35.35 hectares. Beyond the ecological benefits, IMPACT underscores our commitment to safeguarding the economic livelihoods of coastal communities, enhancing resilience and sustainability.
