Energy Plantation

Planting “the seeds of tomorrow’s energy” today

Putting the plant in power plant

Plants are nature’s powerhouse. At Indika Nature, they also hold the potential to drive Indonesia’s transition toward a clean-energy future, in the form of renewable biomass.

Our 23,590 hectares of plantation forest concessions include 15,000 hectares dedicated to Calliandra, a fast-growing, calorie-dense plant that can be sustainably harvested for processing into wood pellets. With a potential emissions reduction of up to 85% compared to coal, it is clear our energy diet needs to go plant-based.

The Red Calliandra plant exemplifies regeneration. We harvest its branches twice yearly without further land clearing. Additionally, it hosts nitrogen-fixing Rhizobium bacteria, enriching the soil and aiding carbon release.

How we produce the bio energy

By harnessing the power of organic matter, a biomass plantation serves as a sustainable source of energy production, reducing reliance on fossil fuels and mitigating greenhouse gas emissions.

Indika Nature, through Jaya Bumi Paser, meticulously researches and selects potential locations for our energy plantations, ensuring optimal growing conditions for red Calliandra (Calliandra calothyrsus). We designate land that undergoes detailed preparation to create the ideal environment for red Calliandra cultivation.

The growing process begins in specialized nurseries, where automated watering systems and diligent monitoring provide the best possible conditions for the young seedlings. After two to four weeks, the healthiest seedlings are carefully transplanted from the nursery to the prepared land, where they will serve as feedstock for sustainable energy. When the trees reach maturity in about a year, we harvest their biomass based on size and quality, taking only trimmings to allow each tree to regrow for future harvests—a regenerative process that embodies Indika Nature’s commitment to sustainability.

The harvested wood particles are then processed in specialized dryers to remove excess moisture, ensuring optimal conditions for pellet production, and enhancing quality. Our wood pellets, with a moisture content of 9-12%, are properly bagged to preserve their quality for distribution.

The packaged wood pellets are then transported from the production facility to designated warehouses or distribution centers efficiently, minimizing emissions from transportation. Our current production capacity is 90,000 tons annually, providing a sustainable alternative to fossil fuels for various markets and consumers.
